IU - Sogyeokdong

I expected to hate this song when I saw that Seo Taiji composed the song as I was expecting another "Nan Arayo" or some shit.

However, I learned that I should only pre-judge songs if they come from YG because YG has consistently released shitty tracks for the past two years.

Thankfully, I really enjoyed this song, contrary to my expectations. IU's airy vocals match very well with the slow, synth beat which makes this song very relaxing to listen to as I focus on the lyrics of the song.

At first I wanted the song to be faster, but I thought that would have ruined the atmosphere the instrumental and lyrics created. I generally prefer my electronic songs to be fast, but this is a case in which a slower tempo works in the song's favor. However, the song lacks any real progression, making the second half of the song a bit of letdown, and the long-ass MV didn't help any with a random cutoff in the middle of the song.

You can listen to Seo Taiji's version here.

In the end, I'm happy to see IU continuing to branch out and try genres new to her. This is what makes her one of the more interesting solo artists to follow in Korea.

  1. Really like this song as well. It was very soothing to listen to, which makes it very unique to me because most k-pop songs that try to be soothing take a r&b or ballad road. This and Stellar's Mask take different approaches and I like that.

  4. IU's voice is unique and versatile and fits the variety of songs she does. I thought it was cool how the music stops and she reacts to the alarm at 3:38.

  5. I am a fan of IU's MVs, probably more than her songs. She's just sitting, mouthing words, and she's wonderful to watch!

I like the song; It's melancholy and sweet.
